The woodcutter opened the door of church, walked to the fireplace, and began to light a fire in the fireplace.
It caught easily, and with gentle
feeding the flames started to produce some good heat. As he relaxed
with his companion- they became aware of the insects.
The worms were crawling out from the
gaps in the floorboards, writhing in apparent agony.
Soon came the mosquitos, the midges and
the sandflies.
As they talked, they swatted the flying
pests, and brushed the worms aside, while building up the campfire.
After a while, nothing seemed to stop
the incessant droning of the little parasites, so they extinguished
the fire and moved on.
A meeting of the village elders was
called the next day, and the decisions were made to sterilize the
pests-to prevent further breeding; no more woodcutting or fires so
that the pests would freeze in the winter;and to starve them of their
food.
The productive villagers began to build a new church on the
other side of the village.
